0614 Characterizing Sleep in Early-Morning Shift Workers at Risk for Shift Work Disorder

Abstract Introduction Shift work is increasingly common in our 24/7 society and can cause sleep disturbances excessive sleepiness. Roughly 10-43% of shift workers are diagnosed with disorder (SWD), characterized by sleepiness accompanied reduced duration and/or insomnia. While more individuals early morning shifts (shift start 3-6AM) compared to overnight shifts, few studies have investigated this population. The aim study was characterize a population early-morning workers. Methods We (18-65yrs) from New England who were screened for clinical trial wake-promoting agent. Pre-screening consisted the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) Work Disorder Questionnaire (SWD); screening Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) ; physical exam including an ECG, CBC, urinalysis, comprehensive metabolic panel; home test (HST), Monitored Wakefulness Test (MWT); physician evaluation their (Clinical Global Impression [CGI]); self-evaluation regarding how affected everyday life (Patient [PGI]). Only data consented met initial inclusion criteria being high risk SWD included analysis. Results 158 pre-screening began process. Most worked retail, healthcare, maintenance, or transportation, five (65%) 40+ hours (72%) per week, 8.8±1.9 hours. 41 out abnormal findings on PE, blood/urine tests; 26 previously un-diagnosed OSA PLMD; 4 ineligible other reasons; 7 excluded after MWT due long latency, 20 lost follow-up/withdrew 60 completed criteria. Their average (±sd) age 37±11 years, 45% women, PSQI score 7.5±2.7, 5.6±1.0, ESS=16.3±3.1, CGI=4.2±0.9, PGI=3.6±1.1. Conclusion Early-morning at increased report short disturbed sleep, sleepiness, negative impact quality life. Many undiagnosed PLMD.
